FAQ Part 4: equipment

Q: What type of equipment do you use and why?

A: DTyler Photography uses a wide variety of Nikon digital cameras, including the Nikon D3 camera, Nikon D3x, Nikon D700 and Nikon D300 cameras. While Canon equipment is very fine in its own right, the ergonomics of the Nikon brand are unsurpassed and we've found that the RAW files are far more robust when correcting exposure levels.

Nikon sensors, especially those found in the D700 model are currently unsurpassed in low light photography performance and provide the least amount of digital noise at high ISO level Please see http://www.dxolabs.com for more information on camera make and model variations and image quality tests.

Cameras - The camera we use the most often is the Nikon D700 camera, which has several attractive features not found in any other Nikon model. The $2699 Nikon D700 features the same sensor as Nikon's flagship camera, the $5000 Nikon D3 camera in a much smaller package. Unlike the D3, the D700 offers built in sensor cleaning and integrated wireless flash control, two features we have grown to love.

The $8000 Nikon D3x is Nikon's first 24mp camera, however due to the large file sizes and slow processing, we reserve its usage to special projects such as advertising that make use of its unique features.

Lenses, lighting, etc - We employ a wide variety of Nikon brand professional quality prime and zoom lenses. All lenses in our arsenal feature fixed apertures of f/2.8 or wider and cover all focal lengths from 15mm to 400mm. For lighting, we use Nikon SB-900 speedlights, complemented with SB-600 speedlights and professional studio strobes for in studio shoots.
