If I said “I really like maternity shoots”, it would be like saying “the ocean is kind of damp”. It’s a type of portrait photography I get very excited about, because there’s something so peaceful and beautiful about it. A running theme lately has been that a large number of our recent clients are celebrity look alike’s and Roshani’s husband Corey looked EXACTLY like a young Mark Hamill, so much so that it was difficult not to do the classic pose from the original Star Wars movie poster. The Star Wars nut in me was going crazy the entire shoot :p
I had Sarah do a simple, very ‘natural’ look – maternity sessions aren’t one of those things you get all dolled up for; the organic beauty of maternity photography really shines through with simple autumn colours. Likewise I kept my backgrounds pretty simple as well and used some nice lighting setups to create drama in the shots. Quick lighting tip – for the shots on grey, I stuck with a large rectangular softbox three quarters rear, right out of the camera frame and used a beauty dish as an accent light (lighting purists would call this blasphemous, but it was easier than trying to wrestle the beauty dish off and then screwing on a second softbox and the results look remarkably the same).
Quick maternity tip – the time to get portraits done is right at the start of the third trimester; there’s a nice baby bump and great skin glow at around 6 months!
