Brock & Ashley in studio bridal portraits

This was our second shoot with Brock and Ashley and Sarah and I are absolutely in love with them!  They're one of those couples where you can just look at them and can immediately tell that not only will they be together forever, but that their love and admiration will be entirely undiminished.

These were taken in our new studio and I went for a different approach in terms of lighting; I'm somewhat of a comic book movie geek and love the edgy lighting that's become so popular in comic book movie posters (a la Iron Man, Jonah Hex, Walking Dead, etc), so for many of these shots, we used a somewhat complex four light setup with a large softbox as our main, a snooted (snoot is a long cone that acts as a spotlight) strobe as fill, a hairlight with a loose 20 degree grid and a fourth light with a blue lighting gel for a few of the shots.

We're having an amazing time in our studio so far and it's made all the better with great clients like Brock and Ashley.  During the shoot, we told them both how having them there brightened up our entire day (we were recently hit by a drunk driver, so the time leading up to our shoot with Brock and Ashley was a tiny bit stressful) and their very presence put giant smiles on both of our faces.

While we had unfortunately booked their wedding date before meeting them, we've enjoyed our time with Brock and Ashley more than words can describe and we can't wait to have the opportunity to provide them with a family shoot as well!

Allen & Lisa: Some like it HOT!

Remember how, on the old Warner Brothers cartoons, hot weather was depicted by a thermometer exploding?  When the weather spiked somewhere around 113 in Las Vegas, that's a bit what it felt like.  My origin state is Wisconsin, so you might think that the Mojave Desert heat would get to me, especially while carrying so much camera gear.  While it's not the most pleasant feeling in the world, I never realized how much we've acclimated to the heat until meeting Allen and Lisa, who almost literally melted.

I'm so glad that they mentioned their discomfort to us though, as we later found out that they actually became ill from the heat!  A couple of important tips when shooting outdoors in Las Vegas is to always remain hydrated.  In the morning, try to drink an entire bottle of water before leaving your home or hotel room and bring along several bottles of water to drink along the way.  When you sweat, you not only lose water, but salt as well, so while it may seem counterintuitive, also bring along a slightly salty snack like peanuts (which has the added benefit of protein).  But most importantly, stay away from alcoholic beverages the day before and the day of your shoot (especially any shoot in hot weather!).  Strong drinks can dehydrate you and not only leave you feeling too sluggish to get into the shoot, but leave you with bloodshot eyes, saggy or lined skin and puffy eyes.

Our plan was to do a couple of hours on Fremont Street with the wedding couple and party, but after around 40 minutes or so, these poor folks had nearly passed out from heat exhaustion and we decided to reconvene at our new studio the next day.  Allen and Lisa are not only a great looking couple, but once they got into the shoot, they were on FIRE and while our time together was short, I liked them quite a bit and I hope that they come see us again (in slightly cooler weather, 'natch :) )

Nick and Riza engagement photography – Smoke on the water, fire in their eyes

A client once asked me what I like to see in couples' photography.  My answer, in a word:, was "Happiness".  I love sweepingly dramatic poses, but sometimes it's nice to see couples in love just having fun.  That's what Nick and Riza are all about and that's why I was so eager to work with them again; their bright colors and brighter personalities are a breath of fresh air.  Our last engagement shoot with Nick and Riza was cut a bit short and at the end of it, I told them that I would like a few more shots.

The importance of an engagement shoot has little to do with the actual pictures; instead, it's a wonderful opportunity for a photographer to get to know his clients and it gives the clients the chance to not only warm up to the camera, but practice on how to pose….or NOT pose.

I'm very glad that we had the opportunity to work with Nick and Riza again and what really struck me in this second engagement shoot was how much more passion they showed in front of the camera and how much more confident they seemed.  In one of the shots below, I decided to leave in two beads of perspiration, as I loved how passionate it looked and it really put the scenery into context; here we were on a 110 degree day in front of a pond (ha!  There IS water in Las Vegas….trees as well!) – there was something like 5000% humidity and you could practically drink the water vapor in the air….the green water va–okay, probably a bad analogy, but after just a few moments, I could almost literally take a swim in my shirt.  It reminds me of the time a client asked me to wear a suit for an outdoor July wedding at Lake Las Vegas – it was a very, very bad idea and the combination of sweaty legs and kneeling while wearing dress slacks led to my one and only wardrobe malfunction in thirteen years :)

But I digress – having the chance to speak with Nick and Riza for a little while after the shoot, we got an even better feel for their personalities, which are both wonderful.  I'm gushing – I really like these two!

Nick and Riza will be married in 2011 and it's always wonderful to see wedding photography clients reserving their sessions early, to give us time to build a relationship and get to know their unique personalities.  I've often said that the relationship with a wedding photographer and wedding couple is less of a client/vendor relationship and more of a short term partnership with lots of great communication and collaboration.  In the coming weeks, we'll hopefully have the chance to take a few bridal and groom (separate) shots in studio as well, so you'll definitely be seeing more from this amazing couple!

Las Vegas wedding photography with Terence & Doris

We typically recommend reserving a wedding photography session at least six months in advance to allow ample time to work out itineraries and build up a solid relationship between photographer and client.  Terence and Doris were a unique case however, in that their original wedding photographer went out of business just three weeks before their wedding date!  But with sweet personalities that immediately meshed with ours, we were more than happy to take them on as clients and had an amazing time working with them.

Terence and Doris were wed in the always lovely Mandalay Bay chapel here in Las Vegas and afterwards, we all braved the heat for a few portraits outside, before retreating into the blessed air conditioning of their reception at Del Fresco.  While our time together was short, by the end of the day we felt like part of the family and we were so happy that we could offer these two amazing people a happy ending to their day :)

Engagement photography with Brock & Ashley – Nelson, NV

Here’s an interesting fact about rattlesnakes: while snakes are active during the daytime and at night, one of their primary sources of food, rodents, mostly come out at night.  It’s also much more difficult to see a rattlesnake at night, so at the end of our shoot together, when Brock and Ashley told me that they were standing in a pile of snake skins, it took vast reserves of courage not to leap into one of their arms, a la Scooby Doo (and the knowledge that at 6’1″ and 200 pounds I am rather difficult to carry did not hurt either).

We shot Brock and Ashley’s engagement photography session in the always incredible Nelson, NV, which is located just outside of Las Vegas.  If you’ve never been there, I highly recommend checking it out this abandoned but well preserved Nevada ghost town.  We had such an amazing time together that I’ve invited them into our studio for a bridal portrait session, which I am greatly looking forward to shooting!

Nelson is a wonderful location for a portrait session -it’s secluded, off beat, historical and the scenery around sunset is just incredible.  I can’t recommend it highly enough and I look forward to our next shoot and would have LOVED to be their wedding photographer, if their date had been open for us!  Congratulations in advance to Brock and Ashley and we’ll see more of these two in the near future!

Wedding of Josh & Brianna – “Every Rose (bush) Has It’s Thorns”

Recently I was told by a client from Belgium that the custom of having a wedding veil is not practiced in many parts of the world, including of course, Belgium.  I'm personally a 'veil kind of guy' and when I see a wedding veil, I like to see a VEIL (all in capital letters).  Brianna was wearing a VEIL and I'm tempted to add an exclamation mark to the end of that.

Josh and Brianna were wed in beautiful Angel Park in Las Vegas and it's a testament to the wonderful people that we work with that, having only met Brianna 30 minutes before her ceremony, we instantly hit it off and felt entirely comfortable with the both of them, so much so that by the end of the evening, it was difficult to leave!

This was an emotional ceremony that I got myself completely caught up in, watching these two beautiful people exchange their vows.  That's the magic of wedding photography – we have the absolute best seats in the house!  It's the difference between an old CRT and a large screen HDTV.

But as the song goes, 'Every rose has its thorns' and while walking down the aisle, well….let's just say that everyone has Brett Michaels in their heads.  The rose bush really got hold of that veil and just refused to let go!  Thankfully, the wonderful staff at Angel Park came to the rescue and the look in Brianna's eyes as she passed by told me "that's going to make a HILARIOUS photo!"

Forgive my waxing poetic, but it's like a metaphor for life and especially marriage.  We all hit a snag every now and then, but if we can walk away smiling, everything is going to be alright.

While we only had around five or so minutes post ceremony and formals for portraits and I spent it being mesmerized by Brianna's beautifully long veil, much in the same way as a snake charmer.  Ideas rolled through my head in such abundance that I wished I could slow down time so I could take it all in.

At any rate though, Josh and Brianna are two of the nicest people I have ever met (which is really saying a lot because I think everyone is nice :) ) and I've made them promise to come visit us for more bridal shots on their next trip to Las Vegas!

Luis & Callie – “Road Trippin’”

One of the most unique aspects of Las Vegas is that you can find anything you need at any time.  From steak dinners at half past two in the morning, to car rentals, to all night bowling alleys, Las Vegas is a town that delivers.  It's been said that New York is 'the city that never sleeps', but even the Great Melting Pot will siesta before the city of neon is caught snoozing.

I can think of no better example of Las Vegas' accessibility than with Luis and Callie.  Ever have one of those moments where you're driving and suddenly recall that you forgot to remember to bring some crucial item?  Well, after four hours of driving, Luis and Callie remembered that they forgot to bring along……the wedding dress.

But in true Vegas fashion, there was a dress rental store close at hand and honestly, Callie looked so gorgeous that it looks as though her dress was made for only her.  Even better was the fact that these two could move just as smooth as silk and the way they kissed and gazed into each others' eyes left even a chatterbox like myself struck dumb with awe.

From the word 'go', Luis and Callie sorted themselves like professional models and our time together went by much too quickly and though it's only been a few short weeks since we met them, my partner Sarah and I miss them dearly and hope we have the chance to see them again!

Wedding of Ryan & Kristina – “It’s times like these”

Today, a friend posed the question: “What are you like when nobody is looking?”  It was a general question and not necessarily directed at me personally, but it made me think.  My reply (while I began with the joke that when nobody is looking, I am rather surly..which is a joke, ‘natch) was that when nobody is looking, I’m pretty much the exact person that I am when they are looking – polite, positive thinking and generally a pretty happy guy.  I ended with the joke that I blame my proper midwest upbringing, but if I’m to be honest, my happiness comes from the good people that we have been blessed to work with over the years.

Ryan and Kristina are no exception to the rule and the first thing Kristina did when we arrived was give both my partner Sarah and I a big hug, despite my warnings that I was ‘sweaty and horrible’ from the outdoor walk up to Juno Garden in the steamy 43 degree summer day (that’s Celsius, by the way.  The temperature in Fahrenheit was a scorching 110 degrees!).

While our schedule had us beginning our shoot immediately after the ceremony, we decided to show up around 40 minutes early to greet the happy couple and we were immediately impressed not only at how nice both of them were, but also how well we immediately hit it off.  We knew that, despite the heat, we were going to have a wonderful time together.

We took a few shots around Caesar’s Palace until the heat got the best of everyone, but I had such an amazing time working with them that I called them to take a few more shots around Fremont Street the next day.  Coming from the midwestern U.S., Ryan and Kristina remind me of everything I loved about that region – polite, friendly and with a sweet, almost delicate method of interacting with each other that not only brightened my week, but made me look forward to their next Las Vegas visit!
